Reliquary Angels MR 551, MR 550 Richelieu 1st floor room 6 showcase 4 The Bible and angels Each of these angels is mounted on a base with six sides embossed with French coats of arms. They are holding a cylinder-shaped chest made of rock crystal. The relics of Saint Luke and Saint Sebastian were at one time stored in them.
In the Bible, the Hebrew word mal’akh and the Greek term aggelos are translated as ‘angel’ when referring to a spiritual creature. These words appear almost 400 times in the Bible. They both share the same meaning of 'messenger'.
The most eminent among them, ‘The Word of God’ (Revelation 19:13), is Jesus Christ. He is often identified as the Archangel Michael or ‘chief angel’ (Jude 9). The Bible specifies the names of only two faithful angels, Michael and Gabriel (Daniel 12:1; Luke 1:26).Note that some angels refused to disclose their names to humans.(Genesis 32:29, Joshua5:14, Judges 13:17, 18). John the Apostle attempted to worship angels, but was rebuked on two occasions in these terms:“Be careful! Do not do that! (…) Worship God.” - Revelations 19:10; 22:8, 9. The Bible warns against a ‘worship of the angels’, after an expression borrowed from mysterious pagan initiation rituals (Colossians 2:18, NWT note).AR58
