Augustus     MR 99
Denon  Rez-de-chaussée   salle 23

The first Emperor of Rome,
referring to his real name
Caius Julius Caesar Octavius,
he was one of the three Caesars
mentioned by name in the Bible.
Just like Julius Caesar,
Augustus is recognizable
from his portraits.
The one exhibited here reflects
the influence of
Greek sculptural idealism.
It was undoubtedly created
between 30 and 20 BC.

Augustus :  one of the three Caesars
mentioned by name in the Bible

During the Modern Era, the head was placed on a statue wearing a toga that has been dated to the mid second century AD due to the sharp folds and the clear distinction made between the different parts of the clothing.
Augustus restored peace, order and prosperity to Rome after the civil wars which followed the assassination of Julius Caesar, of whom he was the adopted heir. While fully respecting Republican institutions, he established a de facto monarchy. He boasted of having ‘ found Rome brick and left it marble '.
The crown of oak or civic crown
was awarded by the Senate in
honor the young emperor in 27 BC

The facial features of this portrait

Augustus received the title of Pontifex Maximus, a pagan religious title.  AR60
The Romans gave this Emperor
the name Augustus,
which means ‘ high, consecrated ’.
He was deified upon
his death by the Senate.  AR61
Augustus gave his name
to one of the months of the year.
In 2 BCE, “a decree went forth from Caesar Augustus for all the inhabited earth to be registered (…) Of course, Joseph also went up from Galilee” . - Luke 2:1-5
As a result, Jesus was born in Bethlehem, as predicted by the biblical prophecies (Daniel 11:20; Micah 5:2).

The decree of Caesar Augustus and the birth of Jesus

Many believe that Jesus was born
on 25 December.
However, the Emperor of Rome would not
have ordered the people, who were always
quick to revolt, to travel in the middle
of winter for a census.
Everything points towards the belief that
Jesus was born in early autumn AR86
